Getting Active in Clare Print

Getting Clare Active is a joint initiative between the Clare Sports Partnership and the HSE Health Promotion Unit based here in Clare. The initiative will compliment the Getting Ireland Active programme.

GP Exercise Referal Scheme

We currently have a number of tutors trained to deliver the GPERS programme. We are actively working with local facilities to agree terms of usage and parrallell to that, we are engaging with the local Primary Health Care Teams to agree refferal procedures.

Community PALS

We have 20 PALs trained in 2009 / 2010. They have now become part of the Midwest PAL's Network that is facilitated by the Local Sports Partnerships. The Midwest Network will be offereing periodic trainnig and fun days (Supported by Go for Life and the ISC). In Clare we have just formed a Clare Older Persons Physical Activity Network. The first meeting was held in February 2011 with further meetings and actions to follow in 2011.

Community Physical Activity Initiatives

At present there are a number of initiatives taking place. In Lisdoonvarna, Bellharbour, Mullagh, Ennis, Scarriff and Sixmilebridge, we have meet and train groups set up. These are all, except Sixmilebridge, female based. We haev also just trained 10 people to deliver Active Leadership courses in different comunities. We hope that the first of these will be up and running by Christmass. For the unenployed, we have free circuit classes in the Ennis Leisure Centre until the 29th November. We will be running similar initiatives in Kilrush and Shannon before Christmass. On an education front, we have been workong with the VEC to bring a FETAC Sports and Recreation course where 16 students have just graduated. Another 2 groups have started in Outdoor Leisure Studies and Sports and Recreation.
